Abby Peyton Laporte completed her undergraduate education with a bachelor's degree in Biology, Humanities, & Spanish (Interdisciplinary BioHumanities with a Latin American Studies emphasis, cum laude honors for her grade point average, to be exact).

Abby recently received her graduate degree in summer of 2023 as an MFA in creative writing with a narrative medicine emphasis. She presented her final graduate thesis framework to peers, professors, family, and some friends (and open to the public,) which proceeded a 30 minute excerpt reading from her 111 page selected MFA works, by the title "Lucid, Likable, and Hopefully Sane: The Narrative Medicine of Socio-Psychiatric Recovery." The abstract of this curated collection is available on Dominican Scholar, although the text itself is under embargo per standard practices.

She is previously published in The Berkeley Times Poetry Edition, Unlimited Literature, and Tuxedo Literary Magazine. She self-published a debut chapbook, "Bitter Elixir," as well as her undergraduate thesis available from Dominican Scholar, by the title of "Sacred Lucidity: Embodied Identity Through the Lens of Poetry."

Abby has also performed in standup comedy shows from San Francisco to Stockton to San Jose. The material touches on topics of psychotic disorders, psychotic features, body image, likability, and misunderstanding of mental health recovery, as well as privilege and nuances of identity. She is constantly writing new material and hopes to find long-term housing enough to get back to shows and mics more regularly.

Her aforementioned graduate thesis explores neurological remission, recovery, and locating identity. She also is beginning to work with the National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter in Marin County as a public speaker about her experiences both in and finally outside of the hospital. All in all, Abby channels her psycho-medical chaos into loving communications for a healthier, happier world.

Work Summary & Mission Statement

I work in communications, written and verbal, centered around health sciences and storytelling for mental health and medical psychiatric experiences.

My primary strength is front-facing storytelling in various forms, primarily through creative expression of lived experiences of serious mental illness (SMI) recovery and medical impacts. I regularly apply this specific skill set in writing, both published and forthcoming, public speaking about mental health recovery, and (my personal favorite) standup comedy writing and performing that centers in themes of health science and medicalized identity.

My work in media, writing, and public relations has helped me understand the other side of storytelling, as well as the background work that is needed to create effective understanding between individuals and audiences on a publishable or marketable scale. This is a skill I am still developing further.

I have also worked in customer service, retail, and hosted open mics. I am comfortable with social leadership roles in relation to storytelling or organizational needs overall.
